The Appalachian Prison Book Project (APBP)

APBP is a nonprofit with the mission to provide books and education to incarcerated people in Appalachia. I acted as their Professional Writing & Editing intern for five months from August to December 2021. During that time, I improved organizational effectiveness, developed a comprehensive research project, authored a blog post, and more. I have since taken on the role of Volunteer Coordinator.

Remote Wrapping Sign-Out

I transformed 12 loose-leaf pages of notebook paper that acted as a remote work sign-out sheet into a single Google Form. This change ensures that APBP can document all materials leaving the worksite and have a form of contact for all remote volunteers. My improvement also saves time, ensures accuracy, and is accessible remotely. You can read the Board Proposal I presented to obtain approval from the APBP Board here.

Educational Infographic

I curated the infographic to the right using Canva of 13 ways outside allies can support reading and education in prison.

The infographic contains links to multiple helpful resources for viewers. I purposefully compiled a range of ways to get involved, to reach as broad an audience as possible. I appealed to viewers by presenting ways to get involved without spending money or leaving the comfort of your home.

I learned a lot about the conventions of multimedia writing through the drafting of this artifact. I utilized negative space and color to convey my message in a simple, esthetic fashion. My use of graphics and minimal text balances the aesthetic-usability effect.

Podcast Interview Questions

I wrote the interview questions for a planned podcast episode featuring Darrin Lester: a justice-impacted scholar. Unfortunately, Darren became ill and passed away before we could complete the interview.

Nonetheless, his memory, these questions, and the skills I gained preparing them still have relevance.
